Die beiden \u00d6kosysteme im Norden Tansanias sind von Grasland und Akazienb\u00e4umen \u00fcberwachsen, in denen Millionen Grosss\u00e4uger wie Zebras, L\u00f6wen, Antilopen, Elefanten und Leoparden frei umherstreifen. Eines der eindrucksvollsten und bekanntesten Tiere dieser Savannen ist die Giraffe, das gr\u00f6sste S\u00e4ugetier der Welt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">Hier \u2013 auf einem Gebiet von gut 25\u2019000 Quadratkilometern \u2013 f\u00fchren Monica Bond von der Universit\u00e4t Z\u00fcrich und ihr Team vom Wild Nature Institute eine umfassende Studie \u00fcber Geburten, Todesf\u00e4lle, Bewegungen und Verhaltensweisen von Massai-Giraffen (<i>G. c. tippelskirchi<\/i>) durch. Das <i>Masai Giraffe Project<\/i> l\u00e4uft seit 2011 und basiert auf den Daten von rund 4.000 Tieren. In den letzten drei Jahrzehnten ist ihr Bestand um 50 Prozent zur\u00fcckgegangen. Immer mehr der Savannenw\u00e4lder, in denen die Tiere leben, werden in landwirtschaftliche Nutzfl\u00e4chen umgewandelt. Auch die Wilderei ist ein wachsendes Problem: viele Massai-Giraffen werden f\u00fcr den Buschfleischmarkt get\u00f6tet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Das <i>Masai Giraffe Project<\/i> soll helfen, diese negativen Entwicklungen zu stoppen. Monica Bond und ihr Team halten die Geburten und Todesf\u00e4lle ihrer 4\u2019000 Studientiere fest und beobachten, wie die Giraffen miteinander interagieren und wie sie sich durch ihre Lebensr\u00e4ume bewegen. So finden sie heraus, wo es den Giraffen gut geht, wo nicht, und wieso.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">Mit ihrer Forschung liefern sie wichtige Informationen f\u00fcr die Entwicklung von Schutzmassnahmen, die f\u00fcr das \u00dcberleben der Art notwendig sind. So haben sie zum Beispiel herausgefunden, dass weibliche Giraffen, die dazu neigen, sich mit mehr anderen Giraffen zusammenzuschlie\u00dfen, besser \u00fcberleben als sozial isolierte Tiere (<a href=\"https:\/\/royalsocietypublishing.org\/doi\/10.1098\/rspb.2020.2770\" target=\"_self\">\u2192Bond et al., 2021<\/a>) \u2013 dass aber die N\u00e4he zum Menschen ihren sozialen Zusammenhalt schw\u00e4cht (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.news.uzh.ch\/en\/articles\/2020\/Giraffes-Social-Networks.html\" target=\"_self\">\u2192Bond et al., 2020<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Monica Bond und ihr Team k\u00f6nnen diese Daten nur erheben, weil sie die einzelnen Tiere voneinander unterscheiden k\u00f6nnen. Lange unterschieden Forscher:innen die Tiere von Auge, entweder mithilfe von Fotos oder von Fellmusterzeichnungen, die sie im Feld anfertigen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">Vor etwas \u00fcber zehn Jahren erschien schliesslich die erste Mustererkennungssoftware, die diese Arbeit automatisierte. Heute machen es Programme wie WildID (<a href=\"https:\/\/stagingpure.psu.edu\/en\/publications\/a-computer-assisted-system-for-photographic-mark-recapture-analys\" target=\"_self\">\u2192Bolger et al., 2012<\/a>) m\u00f6glich, mit riesigen Datens\u00e4tzen zu arbeiten. Die Kombination von digitaler Fotografie mit maschinellem Lernen er\u00f6ffnet v\u00f6llig neue Forschungsm\u00f6glichkeiten. Zum Beispiel lassen sich damit die sozialen Beziehungsnetzwerke von mehreren Tausend Giraffen analysieren, was ohne digitale Hilfsmittel unm\u00f6glich w\u00e4re.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">Monica Bond und ihr Team arbeiten mit WildID, um die 4\u2019000 Giraffenindividuen zu unterscheiden, die sie erforschen. Sechsmal pro Jahr fahren sie die 25\u2019000 Quadratkilometer ihres Untersuchungsgebiets auf einer festgelegten Route ab, fotografieren jede Giraffe, die sie sehen, und notieren sich ihren Standort, ihr gesch\u00e4tztes Alter und ihr Geschlecht. Im Zeitraum von knapp zwei Wochen pro \u00d6kosystem schiessen sie in der Regel \u00fcber Tausend Fotos, die sie dann f\u00fcr die Fellmustererkennung in WildID einspeisen (<a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s42991-022-00261-3\" target=\"_self\">\u2192Lee, Bond et al., 2022<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">Um die Bilderkennung mit WildID zu erleichtern, hat das Wild Nature Institute gemeinsam mit Microsoft AI for Good ein automatisiertes Verfahren entwickelt, um all diese Fotos auf den Giraffen-Torso zuzuschneiden. Erstens sind sie kosteng\u00fcnstiger als andere Datenerhebungs-Methoden: Viele dieser Programme sind online frei zug\u00e4nglich und wer \u00fcber eine Kamera und einen Computer verf\u00fcgt, kann sie nutzen. Zweitens ist die Arbeit mit Digitalfotos oder Kamerafallenaufnahmen in Kombination mit KIs weniger invasiv als andere Methoden. Dank ihnen m\u00fcssen Tiere nicht eingefangen und beispielsweise mit GPS-Sendern versehen werden, um Daten zu Individuen erheben zu k\u00f6nnen. Denn das ist nicht nur zeitaufw\u00e4ndig und extrem teuer, sondern auch mit Stress f\u00fcr die Tiere verbunden. Monica Bond und ihr Team legen Wert darauf, dass sie die wild lebenden Giraffen mit ihrer Forschung nicht st\u00f6ren.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">Mit <i>spot the spots<\/i> hat die Universit\u00e4t Z\u00fcrich ein interaktives Format entwickelt, das die M\u00f6glichkeiten, die maschinelles Lernen der Wildtierforschung er\u00f6ffnet, einem breiten Publikum kommunizieren soll. Die Szenografin Sonja Koch und die Grafikerin Meltem Kalayci haben mit Bildmaterial aus dem <i>Masai Giraffe Project<\/i> ein Memory gestaltet, das Kinder und Erwachsene herausfordert, sich mit einer Mustererkennungssoftware zu messen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">So vermittelt <i>spot the spots<\/i> interaktiv, wie k\u00fcnstliche Intelligenz im Natur- und Artenschutz eingesetzt werden kann \u2013 und wieso das wichtig ist.
