Alles erwacht zum Leben. R\u00f6tliches Seegras \u00fcberw\u00e4chst den betonierten Entlastungskanal und die Wildtiere sind damit besch\u00e4ftigt, sich um ihre Jungen zu k\u00fcmmern. Das ist das Palo Alto Baylands Nature Preserve: ein semi-urbanes St\u00fcck Sumpfland inmitten der Autobahnen, Wohngebiete und Tech-Imperien der San Francisco Bay Area. Hier studiert Bill Leikam das Verhalten des Graufuchses (<i>Urocyon cinereoargenteus townsendi<\/i>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-videopress\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"VideoPress Video Player\" aria-label='VideoPress Video Player' width='500' height='281' src='https:\/\/videopress.com\/embed\/CowgpjgQ?cover=1&amp;autoPlay=1&amp;controls=0&amp;loop=1&amp;muted=1&amp;persistVolume=0&amp;preloadContent=metadata&amp;useAverageColor=1&amp;hd=0' frameborder='0' allowfullscreen data-resize-to-parent=\"true\" allow='clipboard-write'><\/iframe><script src='https:\/\/v0.wordpress.com\/js\/next\/videopress-iframe.js?m=1674852142'><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Der Graufuchs ist der urspr\u00fcnglichste Canide, der \u00abUrhund\u00bb: Er hat sich \u00fcber einen Zeitraum von acht bis zw\u00f6lf Millionen Jahren entwickelt und ist damit viel \u00e4lter als der Schakal, der Wolf und alle anderen Caniden. Da er sich mit keinem anderen Hund auf dem Planeten paaren kann, ist die genetische Abstammung des Graufuchses Millionen Jahre lang unver\u00e4ndert geblieben.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bill Leikam hat diesen faszinierenden Tieren sein Leben gewidmet. Als er vor \u00fcber zehn Jahren am Rand einer alten Schotterstrasse seinen ersten Graufuchs sah, wusste er, dass er diesen Ort immer wieder aufsuchen w\u00fcrde. Bald fing er an, sich Notizen \u00fcber das Verhalten der F\u00fcchse zu machen. Er entdeckte, dass jeder von ihnen eine eigene Pers\u00f6nlichkeit hatte, und so gab er jedem einen Namen statt einer wissenschaftlichen Bezeichnung. Als sich die F\u00fcchse an ihn gew\u00f6hnt hatten und sich in seiner Gegenwart wohl f\u00fchlten, begannen die Jungtiere ihm manchmal aus reiner Neugierde zu folgen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">2013 gr\u00fcndete Bill schliesslich gemeinsam mit dem \u00d6kologen und Filmemacher Greg Kerekes das Urban Wildlife Research Project (UWRP). Das UWRP nutzt 15 Kamerafallen, um zu beobachten, wie sich die F\u00fcchse nachts verhalten. Weil sie d\u00e4mmerungsaktiv und damit am fr\u00fchen Abend und in der Morgend\u00e4mmerung unterwegs sind, kann Bill ihr Verhalten auch direkt beobachten und dokumentieren. Es gibt dort kleine buschige Auen und B\u00e4ume, auf die die F\u00fcchse klettern k\u00f6nnen. Aber wie \u00fcberall spielt auch hier der Klimawandel eine Rolle. W\u00e4hrend es normal ist, dass das satte Gr\u00fcn des Fr\u00fchjahrs im Sommer in ein tiefes Ockerbraun \u00fcbergeht, hat sich die Vegetation in den letzten Jahren dennoch ver\u00e4ndert. Die letzten Winter waren trockener als zuvor, und obschon der Winter 2022\/23 einer der feuchtesten seit Jahrzehnten war, herrscht in den Baylands jetzt eine D\u00fcrre. Diese Trockenperiode ist der Auftakt f\u00fcr ernste und langfristige Ver\u00e4nderungen, die gerade erst begonnen haben.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Es gibt noch eine weitere Herausforderung f\u00fcr die Tierwelt des Silicon Valley. Die St\u00e4dte im Tal wachsen, Strassen und Autobahnen werden gebaut. Das wirkt sich auf die Lebensr\u00e4ume der Tiere aus, die immer kleinteiliger werden. Diese Fragmentierung hat drastische Folgen: Im Jahr 2016 starben alle 25 Grauf\u00fcchse des Palo Alto Baylands Nature Preserve an einer hochansteckenden viralen Krankheit namens Staupe (engl. <i>canine distemper<\/i>). Nach dem Tod der Grauf\u00fcchse vergingen zwei Jahre und ein Monat, ehe ein neues Fuchspaar \u2013 Laimos und Big Eyes \u2013 im Gebiet auftauchte und es als Revier beanspruchte. Zun\u00e4chst hatte Bill gehofft, dass die beiden Junge bekommen w\u00fcrden, aber leider ist das nicht der Fall. Laimos und Big Eyes scheinen unfruchtbar zu sein.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/s9uSMppb5jY?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=de-CH&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Um zu verhindern, dass sich das Artensterben von 2016 wiederholt, entwickelt das Urban Wildlife Research Project einen Renaturierungsplan, der Lebensr\u00e4ume \u00fcber eine etwa 20 Meilen (gut 32 Kilometer) lange Strecke entlang der Bucht von San Francisco miteinander verbinden soll. Dieser Baylands-Korridor wird die Gesundheit der Wildtiere verbessern und einen artenreichen, \u00fcppigen Lebensraum schaffen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bis dahin bleibt f\u00fcr das UWRP noch viel Arbeit zu tun.
